Virginia

Virginia election history since after world war II till 2000:

Since Dwight Eisenhower's 1'st election in 1952, all elections were won by a republican, with the exception of Lyndon Johnson's landslide election in 1964.

Other statewide offices went for the democrats in all elections until the '70s, after that it changes - like all other Sothern states - it was mixed between both parties.

Interesting facts:

  • Virginia is one of only 2 states that hold the state government elections in a odd year, one year after presidential elections. (the other one being New jersey)

  • Virginia Governors cannot serve for 2 consecutive terms, that's why you'll never see an incumbent governor running in a gubernatorial election.

  • Statistic: since 1977, the Virginia Governor's election always went to the opposing party of the sitting president in the president's first midterm. the same is true for the presidents' second midterm with one exception, under Obama in 2013 the democrat won the governorship. (the fact that the incumbent governor was never a candidate for sure helped.)

History Crumbs:

  • Virginia is among the original 13 colonies that made the U.S.A.

  • Virginia was the unofficial capital of U.S. when the country was founded.

  • 4 out of the 5 first presidents of the U.S. were from Virginia.
